AMERICAN COWGIRLS
YUCAIPA/CHERRY VALLEY,
CA
The American Cowgirls
are a ladies drill team formed in 1999, available for rodeo, parade, charity,
and community events. Several of the current members had previous
drill team experience, which helped organize and make the group strong
very quickly. We have also been fortunate to have help
from several generous sponsors. The team presently consists of 11
riders.
The American Cowgirls
ride a slow to medium flag routine for grand entry performance and a high-speed
drill for rodeo “half-time” entertainment. Membership tryouts are
open to strong riders of Quarter Horse type (Quarter Horse, Paint, Appaloosa),
with knowledge of lead changes and the ability to ride at speed. The team
mainly practices at the Yucaipa Equestrian Center; however, members also
live in the surrounding areas of Redlands, Cherry Valley, Beaumont and
our desert communities.
Practices continue for
most months of the year because it’s CALIFORNIA!!
In December 1999,
the team performed at the Yucaipa gymkhana/equestrian center arena where
a professional video was made for viewing by potential clients and/or new
members. During 2000 and 2001, the group has entered parades in Yucaipa,
Banning, Cherry Valley, Fontana, and Norco, taking first place in every
judged parade entered. The team placed second in the Lake Perris
competition in 2000 and performed some local exhibition events in 2001.
The American Cowgirls have also performed for the past two years at the
San Bernardino Sheriff’s Rodeo, entertaining a crowd of 10,000 in September
2001. Additional parades, rodeos, and competition are planned for
2002, where we will start the year by
riding in the Tournament
of Roses Parade.
